If you let your lettuce go to seed in the summer, the seeds will probably fall to the ground in concentrated clumps. Springtime comes and the seeds sprout in thick groups. As they begin to grow, you can thin them, pinch off the little root, wash the leaves and put the thinned baby plants right into your salad.

In the spring, if you purchase an egg case from our shop, take it home and place it in a sunny location a few inches to a foot or so above the ground, snug in a bush or low branch. Keep an eye on it. If you can catch the moment the nymphs begin to emerge from the case, you will witness an amazing sight.

Prize winning pumpkins are so big that heavy duty pickup trucks are needed to transport single pumpkins to the judging platforms! In fact, pumpkins grown in California and Oregon can gain up to 10 pounds a day in weight during the peak growing days of the summer.

Grape vines are deciduous perennials that need support for climbing and twining. Grape trellises are especially helpful. The vines can be trained and maintained very easily. Plus, grape provide delicious food, not only for humans, but for your beautiful backyard song birds!

Like tomatoes, eggplants like a long summer of very warm sun. Once well established and growing big, you can stake eggplants to help support their sometimes large, heavy fruit. You can even cage them like tomatoes, but usually a single stake to support the main stem will suffice.
