Ahhh...June is finally here! My favorite month of the year. The days are warm and long and the summer fruits are beginning.
The month of June has the widest variety of best eating fruits available. The cherries and apricots are usually at their very best while the peaches, nectarines and plums are juicy and sweet ! Watermelon along with other melons are consistent in flavor which is perfect for these hot summer days.
There is so much good fruit right now that I am overwhelmed. I even found sweet flame seedless grapes..not imported!! Oh, and I must mention some of the sweetest strawberries and blueberries are right now.
Where did I find this great fruit? I am obsessed so I have been to 3 Farmer's Markets as well as a number of local stores ie Bristol Farms, Whole Foods and Sprouts. Oh and Trader Joe's had fantastic apricots. Red meat Flavorosa plums were at all of the farmer's mkts and the sweet nectarines could be found at Bristol Farms and Whole Foods.
Remember when you choose the stone fruit to smell the stem end, it should be fragrant of sweet fruit....the Nose Knows , hehe. So enjoy this wonderful time of year and start eating as much fruit as you can!

I spotted both white and green asparagus at Whole Foods Market this week. Both were nice and slinder.
If you've never tried white asparagus, it's a novel item, and sometimes difficult to find. But if the price is much higher than the green varieties, you'll have to decide if the color - or lack of color - is worth the extra price. It might be just the side dish you're looking for if you want to make an impressive conversation creating presentation at a dinner party.
You might find the white variety somewhat milder and perhaps a bit more delicate than green asparagus, but many people can't tell any difference in flavor.
Early spring is the time for picking the young asparagus shoots from your garden. If you have the crop and the patience, you can create your own white asparagus by mounding soft compost over and around the young shoots before they reach the surface. Don't worry, they will continue to grow, looking for the sun. You can just keep mounding more compost until they're just the right height.
Enjoy!
